ChatGPT parent OpenAI faces a blockchain rival as a new NFT project creates 3D avatars from text

In late 2022, ChatGPT became a major sensation for its innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI). Simply by entering a brief text prompt, you could request this AI chatbot to write just about anything, and it could do so within a matter of seconds. But one that really stands out right now involves Polygon and its experimentation with AI technology for the non-fungible token (NFT) market.

Here’s what we know:

In a sample scenario from CharacterGPT that you can find on YouTube, you could type in “an old man as a grizzled prospector who wants to retire,” and the AI immediately creates a digital representation of a man from the 1850s dressed in Western gear. This avatar would then be able to answer your questions from the perspective of a California prospector looking to retire.

The CharacterGPT blockchain product looks poised to compete more directly with Dall-E rather than ChatGPT, which generates text responses to typed questions. It has created massive interest through its ability to write convincing articles, cover letters, emails, and messages on dating apps.

Meanwhile, Alethea AI says CharacterGPT will allow people to create “digital twins,” companions, virtual assistants, and parody figures, among other use cases, according to the company’s website.

“Generative AI is advancing at a rapid rate and has the potential to profoundly impact our lives in the coming years,” Polygon cofounder Sandeep Nailwal said in a statement. “I have seen first-hand how Alethea AI has developed this technology over the last few years, and through their CharacterGPT AI engine, users will be able to create interactive characters in a matter of seconds.”
